Charmaine Dragun.

Australian News anchor Charmaine Dragun has committed suicide. The described "beautiful and bubbly" Charmaine Dragun jumped to her death at The Gap - a notorious suicide location in Sydney's East section. Dragun was a top primetime news anchor for the Australian Channel 10.

At 29, she had a great family, a relationship and an equally great job.

Police have confirmed that several witnesses spotted a woman sitting on the cliff before finding her body. Dragun was due to present the 5pm news for Perth and Ten Late News on the day she died. Staff in Perth and Sydney were only informed of her death 15 minutes before the programme was due to air.

"It can be surprising why someone who seemingly has so many things ahead of them would do such a thing," says Associate Professor Michael Baigent, clinical adviser on depression. "They can often put on a brave front until it's too late, which is the tragedy of it all .... They don't let on (that they need help); it makes them feel weaker."

Charmaine began her career as a radio journalist. She worked as a reporter and news reader for Perth radio stations 6PR and 96FM," the bio reads.

"After making the move to television, she rose through the ranks at Ten News, covering everything from entertainment, to stories of major, national significance.

"She soon found her niche in court reporting and went on to cover some of the biggest cases WA has seen in recent years."

Earthquake Strikes Chile

An earthquake has struck Northern Chile causing strong after affects in santiago, the capital of Chile. The quake's epicentre was thought to be nearly 40 miles underground in the Andean village of Quillahua, 60 miles to the west of the city of Calama. The US geological survey measured the quake at 7.7 on the Richter scale.

The quake, which struck at 10:40 EST (15.40 GMT), was also felt strongly in neighbouring Peru and Bolivia.

A spokesman for the Chilean president said initial reports indicated there had been "no injuries, but some damage had occurred, apparently not serious".Power was cut in and around Santiago to prevent damage due to electrocution.

Calama, near the Licanbur volcano, is home to close to 150,000 people. The surrounding land is one of the driest areas in the world and sparsely populated.

The National Emergency Office told Chilean national TV there had so far been no reports of injuries.

The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a tsunami warning for Chile and Peru but Chilean authorities ruled out the alert because the quake was inland.

Lakshmi Tatma is joined to what is known as a "parasitic twin" which stopped developing in the mother's womb.Lakshmi Tatma, who was born with eight limbs, with her mother Poonam and father Shambu.

The operation to correct the rare condition - known as isciopagus - is expected to take up to 40 hours. The £100,000 operation will require differently skilled teams of more than 30 surgeons to work in eight-hour shifts to separate Lakshmi's spinal column and kidney from that of her twin.

After attempting to transplant the shared kidney wholly into Lakshmi's body, another team of surgeons will gradually close up her pelvic girdle while re-orientating her bladder and genital systems.

Plastic surgeons will then graft skin to cover her wounds while an "external fixator" will be attached to close her pelvis gradually over a three-week period.

Her parents, who earn about 50p a day as casual labourers and are both in their twenties, were turned away by a government hospital when they asked for help to increase Lakshmi's chances of survival.

However, they were brought to Bangalore after Dr Sharan Patil, the consultant orthopaedic surgeon leading the operation, visited their village.

Emergency in Pakistan

Pakistan is under martial law . Pakistan president Parvez Mussarraf today declared a state of emergency suspended the country’s constitution, and issued a new Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO)

The official announcement on the state-run Pakistan Television (PTV) came within minutes of a high-level meeting at the President House (Aiwan-i-Sadr) which was chaired by the President and attended by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, senior security and intelligence officials.

Shortly before the official announcement all the private and independent news channels in the country were pulled off the cable network, leading to intense speculations of a possible emergency rule or martial law.

Rumors of pakistan's impending emergency was debated last month and many had believed that it was not a question of why, but when pakistan would be under martial law again

This is the second time in General Musharraf’s tenure that an emergency rule has been imposed, and PCO issued. First it was at the time when the military seized power on October 12, 1999. This time it was when President Musharraf had already ruled the country for eight long years, and was faced with a situation where there was a strong possibility that the Supreme Court may rule against his move to get himself elected for the second time as the head of the state.

According to some details of the new PCO made available to the media, the National Assembly, Senate, provincial assemblies, the prime minister, provincial chief ministers, federal and provincial ministers, governors and all those in the “government services” will continue to function normally.

A senior Pakistani official told CNN that the emergency declaration will be "short-lived," and will be followed by an interim government. Martial law is a way to restore law and order, he said.

The Supreme Court declared the state of emergency illegal, claiming Musharraf had no power to suspend the constitution, Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry told CNN.

Shortly afterward, Chaudhry was expelled as chief justice, his office told CNN. Troops came to Chaudhry's office to tell him.The government appointed Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar as the new chief justice, according to state television.

Staff in Perth and Sydney were only informed of her death 15 minutes before the programme was due to air.

"They can often put on a brave front until it's too late, which is the tragedy of it all .... They don't let on (that they need help); it makes them feel weaker."

"After making the move to television, she rose through the ranks at Ten News, covering everything from entertainment, to stories of major, national significance.

BIG Brother Charley Uchea got a pasting this weekend when a mystery girl attacked her outside a nightclub.

The loudmouth,Charley Uchea who was one of the show's most unpopular housemates ever, got into a fight outside the trendy Embassy nightclub in Mayfair, London.

And for once, it was Charley who ended up on the receiving end of a pasting.

She was thrown to the ground in front of baying clubbers, and had her hair pulled by a girl who'd obviously taken a dislike to the ex housemate.

Despite trying to fight back, Charley was no match for her opponent and she ended up losing some of her beloved extensions.

One version is that Charley was minding her own business and was walking past a group of girls and they began to make remarks about her - then the trouble began!

Suddenly all hell broke loose, there was a fight between Charley and another girl and our heroine was on the floor and yelped as her hair was being pulled. Finally two brave men stepped in and Charley got to her feet screaming and shouting and had to be dragged away.

Her friend said, "It was really nasty and an unprovoked attack. They just jumped on her. One of them said 'let's do her'. She doesn't want to involve the police."

The 22-year-old Charley Uchea recently said that she was considering getting breast implants, to go from a C to an E cup size. She also claimed that she had "an entourage bigger than J-Lo", which made it difficult to go shopping.

New York Marathon Today

The New York City Marathon is an annual marathon road race run over a 42,195 m (26.2 mile) course through all five boroughs of New York City. It is the largest marathon race in the world, with 37,866 finishers in 2006. Along with the Boston Marathon and Chicago Marathon, it is among the pre-eminent long-distance annual running events in the United States and is one of the World Marathon Majors.

The 2007 New York City Marathon will be held on Sunday, November 4th. It will be the final race of the 2006-2007 World Marathon Majors, a two-year series of elite marathon racing that also includes the Boston, Chicago, London and Berlin marathons.

However, there will be very few, if any, elite American marathoners participating in 2007 because they will have competed the day before at the 2008 USA Men's Olympic Marathon Trials. The Trials, which will also take place in New York and be organized by New York Road Runners, will not follow the five-borough NYC Marathon course but will rather be a series of five-mile laps around Central Park, very similar to the first NYC Marathon in 1970.

Assumed to be leaders in the women's elite race are England's Paula Radcliffe, 33, the world record-holder and 2004 New York winner competing in her first marathon since the birth of her daughter in January; Ethiopia's Gete Wami, 32, who won the Berlin Marathon five weeks ago; two-time defending New York champ Jelena Prokopcuka of Latvia, 31, and four-time Boston champion Catherine Ndereba, 35, of Kenya.

The top men are 29-year-old Martin Lel of Kenya, reigning Boston champion; defending New York winner Marilson Gomes dos Santos of Brazil, 30, and 2004 Olympic gold medalist Stefano Baldini of Italy, 36.

Race officials expect between 38,000 and 39,000 at the starting line, a barely manageable number winnowed from the record 100,000 entry applicants.
